The upcoming Mexico-England FIFA World Cup match on Sunday has led to heightened security concerns. Authorities in Mexico City are taking measures to manage public viewing spots, while some venues in California have canceled watch parties due to fears of violence and overcrowding.
Security Measures in Mexico
The English team, known as The Three Lions, will face Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca, renamed for the tournament as Mexico City Stadium. Mexican authorities are wary due to a recent incident where a celebration turned tragic, resulting in four deaths after Mexico’s victory over Ecuador. Over a million people filled the streets of Mexico City, leading to accidental deaths due to suffocation and other causes.
In anticipation of Sunday’s match, authorities plan to enforce a security perimeter along Reforma Avenue. Public access will be limited once capacity is reached. Certain metro stations will be closed, and some roads will be pedestrian-only to improve safety. President Claudia Sheinbaum urged fans to avoid densely crowded areas and excessive alcohol consumption to prevent violence.
Security for the England team is also a priority, with over 100 riot police stationed at their hotel. Thousands of officers will be present at the stadium during the match.
Concerns in California
In California, fear of violence and overcrowding has led to the cancellation of World Cup watch parties. Universal Studios Hollywood canceled all remaining watch parties, citing safety concerns after previous events were overcrowded.
In San Francisco, SPARK Social SF canceled watch parties following a shooting near its venue during the Mexico-Ecuador game. The gunman fled, and two individuals were hospitalized due to gunshot injuries.
U.K.’s Response to the Match
In the U.K., the match will begin at 1 a.m. local time, a challenge for fans due to typical closing hours of pubs. However, the government has permitted pubs to remain open until 5 a.m., benefiting both fans and local businesses.
While fans welcome this move, it has drawn criticism due to the need for police officers to adjust their schedules. The National Police Chiefs’ Council noted that past tournaments have seen increased violence related to alcohol consumption. They urge fans to enjoy the match responsibly and reminded venues to cooperate in ensuring public safety.
