Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey expressed strong disapproval of President Donald Trump’s recent memorandum of understanding with Iran. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Booker described the agreement as an “abject surrender” and labeled Trump the “biggest loser” on the global stage for ending the conflict with Tehran.
Booker asserted that Trump does not deserve recognition for trying to end a war that, according to Democrats, was mishandled from the beginning. “They know that they’ve won this, and they know Donald Trump is perhaps, on the world stage right now, the biggest loser with egg on his face,” Booker remarked.
During the program, NBC’s Garrett Haake highlighted a report where U.S. intelligence officials warned of potential Israeli actions to derail the agreement. Booker referred to Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “failed world leaders” and expressed concern over their influence on Middle Eastern peace efforts.
“These are both failed leaders that I cannot wait until they’re off the world stage,” Booker said.
Booker mentioned his votes to end the conflict and argued that the agreement gave Iran substantial benefits while restricting U.S. options. He emphasized that he opposed the deal, stating, “I do not support this deal that he made, which was an abject surrender.”
The New Jersey Democrat criticized Trump’s negotiation skills, pointing out Iran’s economic gains. Booker explained, “It’s almost as if American dollars, American resources, are now going to be used to help rebuild Iran while we are continuing to carry the bill for it.”
The senator further criticized Trump’s approach, claiming that it diminished U.S. leverage without achieving initial goals. “What the world needs now is leadership,” Booker stated, “but from our Middle East allies to our NATO allies, I’m hearing over and over again, ‘Your president is a danger to the world.'”
NBC aired a segment featuring Democratic strategist James Carville, who argued that Trump deserved credit for ending the conflict. Carville’s perspective suggested, “We started a war, and we surrendered. Let’s be very clear about that, and let’s give Trump credit where credit’s due.” In response, Booker firmly rejected this viewpoint.
Booker likened praising Trump to applauding an arsonist for fleeing a burning building. He shifted his criticism to Congress, accusing Republicans of granting Trump excessive freedom to conduct the conflict before opposing the agreement’s terms.
“I’m really sorry that congressional Republicans from the start of this war have allowed him to do everything he wanted to do, and now they’re crying foul because they don’t like the results,” Booker declared. “Shame on Congress.”
A spokesperson for the White House, Olivia Wales, responded to the criticism. She emphasized the memorandum’s success, citing the destruction of Iran’s military capabilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as achievements that strengthen American security and lower energy prices.
