Sen. Murkowski Opposes Trump’s Attorney General Nominee
Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, has stated her opposition to President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Todd Blanche. Her decision adds challenges to Blanche’s confirmation process.
“The country needs an Attorney General who will restrain the worst tendencies of this administration,” Murkowski remarked in a statement on X. She expressed doubts about Blanche’s ability to fulfill this role.
Murkowski voiced concerns about extensive immunity protections for the president and what she termed the “politicization—even weaponization” of the Department of Justice. She also pointed to the anti-weaponization fund as a significant factor in her decision. Initially intended to support claims of federal wrongdoing, this fund raised concerns for her.
“I am aware that the Department’s nearly $2 billion slush fund—which might have benefited January 6 protesters—is not eliminated permanently. The leverage provided by this nomination led to its current status. Once the Senate votes, the future remains uncertain,” Murkowski noted.
Senators John Cornyn from Texas and Thom Tillis from North Carolina previously delayed the Judiciary Committee’s decision on Blanche’s nomination. They demanded confirmation that the fund was terminated. Blanche submitted the required written assurance on August 2.
Currently acting as Attorney General, Blanche is attempting to alleviate GOP senators’ concerns. He has traveled to Capitol Hill and even visited Murkowski’s state to discuss matters with local and tribal leaders. Previously, Blanche worked as Trump’s personal attorney, defending him against various charges since 2023.
Democrats are expected to oppose Blanche’s nomination. With Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky absent and Murkowski’s opposition, Blanche’s path tightens. The spotlight now turns to Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, who has voiced increased criticism of the administration, especially after losing a renomination bid to a Trump-endorsed contender.
