Senate Republicans planned to remove a controversial $1 billion security fund for President Trump’s White House ballroom project. This decision followed internal opposition within the party.
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana confirmed that the security money was taken out due to insufficient support among Republicans. “My understanding is that the security money has come out, and my understanding is it’s because the votes aren’t there,” he stated after a meeting with fellow senators.
The final contents of the bill remain under discussion. Republican leaders refrained from commenting on potential inclusions. There is uncertainty about whether general funds for the Secret Service might be used for the project without being directly linked to the ballroom.
The choice to exclude these funds illustrates Republican reluctance to fully support Trump’s personal initiative. It marks a setback for the President and highlights limits in his influence over Senate Republicans, who have largely backed his actions during his second term.
The $1 billion was initially part of a larger, $72 billion immigration enforcement package supported by party-line votes. However, issues arose when the Senate’s nonpartisan parliamentarian ruled that the provision violated rules designed to shield the legislation from a Democratic filibuster. Republicans either had to eliminate it or modify it for inclusion.
