Jeff Bezos, known for founding Amazon and owning The Washington Post, expressed support for President Trump on Wednesday. In an interview on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box’ with journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin, Bezos described the president as ‘more mature, more disciplined’ during his second term. He also defended recent controversial cuts to The Post’s newsroom.
Bezos stated, ‘Trump has lots of good ideas, and he’s been right about a lot of things.’ His remarks have raised questions about whether he is trying to gain favor with the Trump administration after previous conflicts.
Bezos participated in the president’s inauguration last year, and Amazon invested $40 million in a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump, spending $35 million on its promotion.
Critics have suggested these actions, alongside editorial decisions at The Post, aim to appease the president. Bezos ended The Post’s presidential endorsements before the 2024 election, despite a planned endorsement for Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. Later, The Post’s opinion section shifted to advocate for ‘personal liberties and free markets,’ excluding opposing views. These changes have triggered significant subscription cancellations over the past 18 months.
Bezos emphasized that he has worked with various presidents, regardless of political affiliation, stating, ‘I am on the side of America.’ He dismissed any connection between Mrs. Trump’s documentary deal and political influence, asserting no personal involvement.
