Reporters covering the White House on Saturday evening found themselves amidst a shooting incident near the White House North Lawn in Washington, D.C. A gunman opened fire at a Secret Service checkpoint. Retired Secret Service agent Jeff James provided expert analysis on the situation.
ABC News White House correspondent Selina Wang was recording a report on President Donald Trump’s statements regarding peace talks with Iran when the shooting erupted. Her video shows her and her crew taking cover as gunfire was heard. This footage has gone viral, accumulating over 10.5 million views.
A source confirmed to Fox News Digital that the gunman was identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best from Maryland. He allegedly opened fire with a pistol and was fatally shot by the Secret Service near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. A statement from the Secret Service indicated that officers responded quickly, returning fire and hitting the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
A bystander was also wounded during the incident, but authorities have not clarified who fired the shot that hit this individual. The condition of this person remains unspecified. Thankfully, no Secret Service agents were harmed. The Secret Service confirmed Trump was inside the White House during these events.
President Trump commended law enforcement for their swift action in a post. He noted the importance of secure facilities for the presidency.
The FBI, along with other federal law enforcement agencies, responded to assist the situation. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that they would continue to inform the public as more information becomes available.
