World War II veteran David Yoho delivered a heartfelt message urging younger generations to honor the sacrifices made by those who served in the military. His words went viral on social media during Memorial Day weekend.
Mr. Yoho, who will celebrate his 98th birthday in August, spoke at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Despite the rain, he shared, “We gave up our yesterdays for your tomorrows.” His strong emotional display included a salute while fighting back tears, highlighting his dedication to remembering those who served.
“Tell them it was a 16-year-old boy in the heart and mind and body of a 98-year-old veteran of World War II.”
The former Merchant Marine veteran reflected on the commitment of more than 16 million Americans who served in World War II following the Pearl Harbor attack. Among them, hundreds of thousands did not return home. Yoho recalled joining the military at just 16 when recruitment ages were lowered due to the urgent need for manpower.
During his speech, he emphasized the significant transition for young recruits: “When you’re 16, you’re a child in the streets, and the day you enter the military, that stops.” His powerful statements underscored the gravity of young soldiers’ dedication.
Yoho paid respects at a ceremony recognizing the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day. Amidst the rain, he highlighted the dedication of the attendees, pointing out their commitment to honoring veterans.
He urged, “Tell your friends about this place. Tell them about standing in the rain to hear us today.” Yoho’s words aimed to ensure that memories of sacrifices lived on through shared stories.
Recognizing the invaluable role of the U.S. Merchant Marines, Yoho acknowledged their sacrifices during the war. He referenced the perilous Murmansk Run, reminding everyone that diverse Americans came together for a common purpose.
He stated, “We are here to toll the bell for those we honor in rest. Toll the bell for every military unit.” These words served as a poignant reminder of the fallen and their contributions.
Marking 84 years since Pearl Harbor, Yoho expressed gratitude to those present, stating, “We are the last of a breed who you sponsored to represent you.” As Japan’s attack plunged the U.S. into war, the nation rallied, placing over 16 million in uniform.
Victims of the war are represented by stars, each symbolizing 100 servicemen. Yoho highlighted the personal connections of each soldier, emphasizing their familial bonds.
He expressed admiration for the Merchant Marines, noting their high mortality rate among the armed forces. He acknowledged, “We lost 733 ships… but God is great and God is good and he kept this old sucker alive.”
Approaching his 98th birthday, Mr. Yoho expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share his experiences, reinforcing the importance of remembering the sacrifices that paved the way for future generations.
