Sinkhole at LaGuardia Airport Disrupts Flights
A sinkhole discovered near a runway at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport caused disruptions in flights on Wednesday. The discovery led to numerous cancellations. Crews identified the depression during a routine inspection.
The sinkhole was detected around 11 a.m. close to Runway 4/22 during the airport’s standard airfield check, according to officials.

The runway was immediately closed off. Emergency construction and engineering teams are on site to investigate the cause and make necessary repairs promptly and safely, as per a statement on LaGuardia’s X account.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey maintained communication with airlines to keep them updated. Travelers were advised to check with their airlines directly for the latest flight status as delays and cancellations increased.
Storms were also predicted for Wednesday, potentially worsening the travel issues.

By Wednesday afternoon, LaGuardia departures faced an average of 30-minute delays, while arrivals were delayed by approximately 38 minutes, according to FlightAware.
