Six Flags Great America to Launch Major Park Expansion

Six Flags Great America plans a significant investment in its park with the announcement of a new roller coaster and themed area, Camp Timber Trail. This project, expected to be ready by 2027, marks the largest park investment in decades. Park President John Krajnak described it as the most substantial development since the 1996 introduction of the Southwest Territory. Celebrating the park’s 50th anniversary, he emphasized the importance of this forward-looking initiative.

“It’s really special,” Krajnak said. “I’m impressed with the investment we’re making. It’s substantial. It’s on a larger scope than we’ve done in some time.”

Camp Timber Trail will cater to families with its woodland camp-themed setting, offering interactive play and outdoor experiences. The main attraction, Sky Hawk, will be a suspended family coaster, noted as the Midwest’s longest, tallest, and fastest of its kind. The ride promises stunning views of the surrounding woodland. Additional attractions include Trail Trotters, an animal trek for exploration enthusiasts, and Forest Grove Play Park, an outdoor play area with nature-inspired features.

During an announcement event on August 6, 2026, Krajnak highlighted the project’s importance for the park’s future. Four rides in the Yukon Territory receive new themes: Sprocket Rockets becomes Chirp Chaser, Crazy Bus transforms into Wilderness Wagon, Yahoo River is now Creek Cruiser, and Buzzy Beez relaunches as Bee Boppin’. Camp Timber Trail will also feature the classic rides Little Dipper and Logger’s Run, blending seamlessly with the new theme.

The area will include themed dining, specialty treats, shopping options with exclusive merchandise, and immersive storytelling elements. Krajnak mentioned potential further theming adjustments for Camp Timber Trail but remained undecided on whether it represents a rebranding of Yukon Territory or is a standalone addition.

The park’s major investment follows Six Flags’ merger with Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. two years ago. This merger provided a positive shift for Six Flags, leading to the sale of some underperforming parks. A rendering of Sky Hawk and the redesigned Wilderness Wagon, part of this multi-million project, underscores the investment’s scale.

This initiative is part of the park’s commitment to creating memorable visitor experiences, improving its environment, and encouraging repeated visits. Enhancements beyond Camp Timber Trail include landscape improvements, upgraded walkways, amenities, and overall aesthetics. Ongoing construction at Camp Timber Trail, scheduled to open in 2027, represents broader renovation efforts across the park.

In the release, Krajnak referred to these developments as the “first step in a multi-year transformation,” framing Camp Timber Trail as the launch of an exciting new era for the park. The project aims to enhance the park’s appeal over the next 50 years, setting the stage for a dynamic future.
