The Social Security Administration (SSA) will adjust the timing of monthly Social Security payments for Americans in November. This change accommodates upcoming holidays and a weekend.
The SSA distributes funds to nearly 72 million people across the nation. Among these are retired workers, people with disabilities, and spouses and survivors of eligible workers. Payments occur throughout the month, influenced by benefit type, claim start, and birth date for most recipients.
November Payment Overview
For November, an early payment is designated for certain beneficiaries due to Veterans Day. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will also receive their November payments earlier than usual.
These changes follow the SSA’s announcement of a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. This increase will raise monthly benefits for millions starting next year.
Specific Payment Dates for November 2026:
- October 30: November’s SSI payment, issued early as November 1 is a Sunday.
- November 3: Payments for those receiving benefits before May 1997 or both Social Security and SSI.
- November 10: Payments for birthdays between the 1st and 10th, issued early due to Veterans Day on November 11.
- November 18: Payments for birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- November 25: Payments for birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
2027 COLA Impact
Recipients will see a 3.6% increase in benefits, as announced by the SSA on October 14. This adjustment surpasses the 2.8% increase of 2026 and affects approximately 76 million Americans receiving Social Security or SSI benefits.
The average retired worker’s monthly benefit is anticipated to rise by $75, from $2,095 to $2,170. Couples receiving retirement benefits will see an increase from $3,238 to $3,355. For disabled workers, average payments will go from $1,642 to $1,701. The maximum federal SSI payment for individuals will increase from $994 to $1,029, with couples’ maximum rising from $1,491 to $1,544.
The COLA is determined using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). This is an inflation measure from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The SSA compares the average CPI-W from July to September with the same months the previous year to set the COLA percentage.
Concerns and Predictions
There are concerns about whether the increase will cover rising living costs. A survey by AARP revealed that 76% of Americans 50 and older feel a 3.5% COLA is inadequate for keeping up with rising prices. For current Social Security recipients, the figure reaches 80%.
“The 3.6 percent COLA raise can make a difference, but it’s also a sign of how much prices have risen due to inflation over the past year,” Tyler End, certified financial planner and co-founder of Retirable, explained to Newsweek. “For someone who gets the average Social Security check, that’s roughly an extra $75 a month,” he noted. “That may not stretch very far as healthcare, groceries, and other basic costs continue to rise.”
Effective Date of Payment Increases
The COLA increase will not affect November payments. Higher amounts will start with Social Security payments issued from January 2027. SSI recipients will receive their first increased payment on December 31, 2026, since January 1 is a federal holiday.
Recipients can view their personalized COLA notices through their my Social Security accounts starting in late November. These notices will provide details on each beneficiary’s new monthly payment and any deductions, including Medicare premiums.
