Democratic socialist candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier from New York is under criticism due to a deleted social media account where she expressed admiration for communism and Marxist ideas. Her posts also referenced Soviet figures.
Avila Chevalier had the backing of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Her Twitter account, Darializabonet, was taken down in June 2022. CNN reported that it included mentions of Karl Marx as essential reading, complaints about the lack of Marxist literature in libraries, and quotations from Assata Shakur, a convicted cop killer.
A retweeted post by Avila Chevalier expressed disbelief at those rejecting communism because of a fear of limited soup varieties under the system, stating, “the universe has foisted upon us the perfect illustration of literally every failing of capitalism.”
She has previously faced backlash for posts advocating the abolition of the police and discussing disrespecting the American flag. Conservatives and moderates criticized her widely, especially after a CNN report.
Our party has become an orgy of socialism,
stated Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., during a Fox News interview. He questioned whether Democrats would continue defending or ignore Avila Chevalier’s radical views.
Others shared critical views. UPenn student Eyal Yakoby highlighted the radical stance of Avila Chevalier on social media. CNN political commentator Scott Jennings pointed out the irreconcilability between socialism and communism, despite public assertions.
Reality TV personality and former mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt drew comparisons between different socialist ideologies on his social media. Republican Senator Tim Sheehy warned about the dangers of socialism and communism, mentioning their historical death tolls.
Despite her controversial views, Avila Chevalier defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District Democratic primary. Given New York City’s political climate, she is favored to win against her Republican opponent in November.
