Son Heung-min, affectionately known as ‘Sonny,’ made headlines in August when he transitioned from Tottenham Hotspur to LAFC. This move marks his entry into MLS with a contract extending through next year. Standing at 6 feet tall, Son is regarded as the most recognized Asian player in international soccer. He is so admired in his home country, South Korea, that he was once described by the Los Angeles Times as being ‘more popular than K-pop.’
Sonny’s journey began when he left South Korea as a teenager to start his professional career in Germany. He played in the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen before joining Spurs in 2015. Over 454 games, he became a crucial player, eventually leading the team to a UEFA Europa League championship in his final year—their first major title in 17 years.
His growth into a leader on the soccer field is largely attributed to his dynamic playing style. He is known for his creative playmaking and his versatility in taking on different roles as needed. His long strides give him a pace that makes him a formidable opponent in any position on the field.
Though Sonny has experienced a goal-scoring slump recently for both LAFC and his national team, he has shown his value through leading the MLS in assists. This could be a positive sign for South Korea, particularly as it heads into what will be Son’s fourth World Cup. The main challenge for South Korea in the group stage appears to be their match against co-host Mexico.
