The San Antonio Spurs have pushed the Oklahoma City Thunder to a decisive Game 7 in the NBA’s Western Conference finals. The Spurs captured a dominant 118-91 win at home in Game 6 on Thursday, May 28, demonstrating their resilience.
The Thunder had previously managed to sweep their first two playoff series but encountered difficulty against the Spurs, a team that bested them in four out of five regular-season matchups. This included a notable 117-102 victory on Christmas Day.
Victor Wembanyama emerged as a key player for the Spurs, delivering a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds in Game 6. He shot 10-for-21 from the field and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc in his 28 minutes on the court. Wembanyama emphasized teamwork, stating, “We played together and passed the ball. We trusted the game plan as always.”
The Spurs’ third quarter was particularly impressive as they outscored the Thunder 32-13, highlighted by a 20-0 scoring run. Wembanyama remarked on the need for consistency, saying, “I think outscoring them 20-0 is not a realistic projection but we want to be consistent.” He also contributed significantly to the team’s defense with three of the Spurs’ seven blocks.
On the defensive end, Stephon Castle made a formidable impact against Thunder’s star player and two-time reigning MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder’s ace struggled, managing just 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting and failing to hit any of his five attempts from long range. Gilgeous-Alexander admitted, “A lot of the shots I’m shooting I’ve taken plenty of times before and felt good. They’re just not going in. It’s too late in the season to abandon my shooting style now.”
Although the Thunder maintain home-court advantage for Game 7, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged the challenge. “We are a motivated group and accept the challenge ahead,” he said. “Anything can happen in a Game 7. It’s win or go home. Playing in your building is nice but it doesn’t really mean anything. You have to be the better basketball team.”
Fans can look forward to this thrilling encounter as the Thunder host the Spurs for Game 7 at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The game is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, at 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
