Stabbing Incident in Downtown Nantucket
A stabbing occurred Tuesday morning in the heart of downtown Nantucket, near the ferry docks that bring many visitors to this wealthy Massachusetts island. Nantucket police reported that officers responded at 10:23 a.m. to South Beach Street, located between Broad Street and Oak Street, following a report of the incident.
The location is a busy commercial area close to the Steamship Authority ferry terminal, where tourists often gather upon arriving in Nantucket’s cobblestoned downtown. The injured person received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported by the Nantucket Fire Department to Nantucket Cottage Hospital.
According to witnesses cited by the Nantucket Current, the stabbing happened after a verbal and physical confrontation between the drivers of a Myles Reis garbage truck and a Sayles Seafood delivery truck parked in the vicinity. Following the attack, the victim ran toward “The Strip.” Employees at Stubby’s and other nearby businesses attempted to staunch the bleeding using napkins until emergency responders arrived.
A second individual involved in the altercation was detained at the scene. Authorities have scheduled an arraignment for Wednesday morning in Nantucket District Court. The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed as of Tuesday evening, and the investigation remains active with no further details released at this time.
The incident comes as Nantucket experiences its peak summer season, dramatically increasing the island’s population with vacationers, day-trippers, seasonal workers, and wealthy homeowners. Efforts continue as Massachusetts State Police referred inquiries to the Nantucket Police Department.
