Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs of the Washington Commanders caused a setback for his team due to a 15-yard penalty in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s Week 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
After catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels, Diggs celebrated by running through the end zone and jumping onto the goal post. This display led to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, pushing the Commanders away from a favorable position for a two-point conversion.
Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that the team intended to attempt a two-point conversion had the penalty not occurred. The team opted for an extra point instead, trimming the Eagles’ lead to 17-16.
Philadelphia secured a win with a final score of 24-22.
“As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like, ‘Oh, I forgot,'” Diggs commented to reporters after the game. “I’ve been playing for a long time, and celebrations like that used to be allowed. I need to improve.”
In his Commanders debut, Diggs recorded four catches for 55 yards, including a touchdown.
Washington aims to recover in their Week 2 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
