Stephen A. Smith Defends Meeting with Trump
Stephen A. Smith defended his meeting with President Donald Trump during an episode of his “Straight Shooter” show. He addressed critics, questioning, “What are you doing?” Smith explained he wanted to bring various issues to the president’s attention, with a focus on DEI initiatives and their impact on private sector philanthropy to HBCUs. He stated that the squashing of these initiatives discouraged corporate charitable efforts.
Smith mentioned that he wanted Trump to address the issue, and Trump indicated he would consider it. Trump even promised to tackle it in upcoming meetings with HBCU officials. Smith acknowledged he tried his best and would continue to do so.
Smith met with Trump, Bill Maher, and Kid Rock at the White House on October 15. He questioned his critics’ actions, stating, “What the f— are you doing? Have you done anything?”
Smith criticized comedian D.L. Hughley for questioning the meeting. Hughley had asked why Trump felt comfortable talking to Smith, given past behavior towards others who challenged him. Smith responded by expressing frustration over criticism from those not actively engaging in community efforts.
Smith defended his actions during an appearance on “The View,” emphasizing the importance of trying to work with the sitting president. He asserted that despite Trump’s history of racial bias, as the president, he needed to attempt dialogue for the benefit of the community.
Smith declared that Trump would remain in office until 2028, urging others to engage with him to get things done. He emphasized he was committed to pursuing every possible measure to improve community interests.
Fox News contributor Joe Concha praised Smith and others like Bill Maher and John Fetterman for valuing the exchange of ideas. Concha lamented a trend among some to avoid debate through censorship.
