Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton recently focused on engaging young voters in his U.S. Senate campaign. Despite this effort, recent polling indicates a significant shift in support toward Democratic state Representative James Talarico. A survey by Texas Southern University’s Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center shows Talarico leading Paxton 76 percent to 18 percent among voters under 35. This is a stark increase from a July survey, where Talarico’s lead with the same demographic was 59 percent to 29 percent.
The upcoming race to replace Senator John Cornyn is highly competitive nationally. The overall poll results show Talarico at 47 percent and Paxton at 46 percent, with Libertarian Ted Brown securing 3 percent and 4 percent of voters remaining undecided. These findings are based on a sample of 1,800 likely voters, surveyed from September 15 to 19, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.31 percentage points. A victory for Talarico would be historic, marking the first Democratic statewide win in Texas in over thirty years.
Why Paxton’s Efforts Aren’t Resonating
Paxton had established “Students for Paxton” chapters across Texas colleges in late August to rally student support and encourage voter registration. “I am incredibly proud to have students fighting for Texas,” said Paxton in an announcement. However, the reception has been tepid. In July, 5 percent of voters under 35 supported Brown, and 7 percent were undecided. By mid-September, Brown’s share of this demographic fell to 1 percent, and the undecided portion dropped to 5 percent, with most gravitating toward Talarico.
Talarico has extended his reach by appearing on numerous podcasts and shows that cater to young men, an audience challenging for Democrats to capture. According to strategist Mike Madrid, this strategy has played a crucial part in Talarico’s rising profile. Talarico’s message has shifted to encompass more centrist views, including taking a nuanced stance on allowing transgender athletes in sports and adopting an “all-of-the-above” energy policy.
This approach has drawn criticism from Republicans, who argue it indicates a lack of trustworthiness. However, Madrid suggests Talarico’s centrist approach could help win Republican voters, essential for success in Texas.
Current Polling Trends
Current polling further illustrates a competitive race. Every public poll in September shows Talarico in the lead, albeit often within the margin of error. The Trafalgar Group puts Talarico ahead by one point, while Emerson College shows a similar margin. ReconMR and the Siena Research Institute exhibit a broader gap, with Talarico at 49 percent to 43 percent.
Republican strategist Alex Patton advises caution, asserting that the data does not reflect a broad acceptance of the Democratic message in Texas. Paxton’s lead among older voters, those over 55, is a notable factor; he leads in this demographic 57 percent to 37 percent.
Election Dynamics
The Cook Political Report labels the Texas Senate seat as one of seven national toss-ups, along with others such as Alaska and Maine. Significant campaign spending underscores the stakes, with Republican groups reserving $47.2 million in advertising as opposed to $6.4 million by Democrats. Despite a challenging path, the conditions appear favorable for a Democratic win, although such an outcome remains uncertain.
Texans head to the polls on November 3, setting the stage for a pivotal decision in both state and national politics.
