Tennessee’s Successful Strategy
Tennessee’s athletic department found a winning formula with its ‘Happy Hour’ promotion during the 2026 football season. The Vols announced that President Donald Trump would attend the top-15 SEC clash against No. 1 Texas at Neyland Stadium, causing a spike in traffic and security.

Early Entry and Discounted Drinks
To manage increased security, the gates opened an hour early, letting fans in at 9 a.m. ET for the 12 p.m. ET kickoff. The early entry aimed to ease security bottlenecks and encourage fans to arrive sooner. Tennessee offered a 50% discount on concessions and alcohol from 9-10 a.m. ET, encouraging fans to enjoy pre-game festivities.
The strategy paid off. The largest pre-game crowd witnessed robust participation, with Tennessee selling 95,000 units of alcohol and making $1.3 million during the game. Impressively, the first beer sale was at 9:02 a.m. ET.
A Continuing Tradition
Recognizing the success of the promotion, Athletic Director Danny White announced its continuation for the rest of the season. Gates will open three hours early, and discounts will apply during the first hour, starting at breakfast time for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff against Auburn.
White expressed his gratitude on social media, motivating other schools to adopt similar promotions to enhance game-day experiences.
