White Sox Face Controversial Seventh Inning
During a tense game at Rate Field in Chicago, the Chicago White Sox managed to load the bases with one out in the seventh inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Miguel Vargas hit a ground ball to third base, leading to a double play. The inning ended, but tensions ran high afterward.
Benches Clear After Controversial Slide
Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe was unhappy with Sam Antonacci’s slide into second base. A verbal exchange followed, and the benches and bullpens emptied onto the field. Antonacci defended his actions, explaining: “I went into the base hard to make a throw challenging. It’s a legal play when contact with the bag is maintained.” He noted players today often avoid such aggressive plays due to the long season.
“I’m just trying to scratch a run because it’s a close game,” Antonacci stated, emphasizing his competitive drive.
Lowe’s viewpoint differed, citing dissatisfaction with recent slides from Antonacci. Despite the altercation, the Pirates won the game, leading to a 4–2 defeat for the Sox in front of 14,803 fans.
Game Overview
The Sox struggled offensively, trailing 4-0 for much of the game. They scored their first run in the seventh with an infield hit from Antonacci, followed by a double play. Munetaka Murakami hit his 31st home run in the eighth.
The Sox had another chance with the bases loaded, but Pirates third baseman Jared Triolo caught a line drive to end the inning. The Sox went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine on base and striking out 14 times.
Manager and Players Respond
After the game, Sox manager Will Venable acknowledged the challenges presented by the Pirates’ eight pitchers, while Antonacci reflected on the contentious slide. “We’re aiming to score any way possible,” he asserted, reaffirming his competitive approach.
Antonacci expressed, “This wasn’t about firing up our team,” emphasizing his intent to play hard. Despite a late-game rally, the Sox fell short and now lead the American League Central by two games over the Cleveland Guardians, who also lost that day.
Starter Davis Martin allowed only one run in five innings, maintaining a competitive edge until the seventh inning when reliever Sean Newcomb faced difficulties. The Pirates took advantage with a two-run single by Konnor Griffin.
Ultimately, Venable commended both teams, saying, “The Pirates’ pitching was impressive. Our offense did well late, but we couldn’t clinch the crucial hit.”
