Indiana Fever’s star player, Caitlin Clark, took to the court on Wednesday night in Indianapolis facing the Phoenix Mercury. However, the game saw controversy as referees did not call a foul after a questionable play involving Clark.
Clark began the game strongly, making assertive moves toward the basket when she slipped in the paint. As three Mercury players managed to strip the ball away, an incident occurred with Alyssa Thomas. Thomas was seen pushing Clark into the neck area and stepping over her after the ball had moved out of the vicinity.
The confrontation, which happened in clear view with an official nearby, resulted in no foul being called. This decision perplexed many, leading to outcry and frustration on social media. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports expressed his discontent, tweeting about the unjust treatment of Clark.
“What are we even doing here? Brutal cheap shot,” Portnoy tweeted. “These women would still be flying commercial without Caitlin and this is how she is treated. Insane.”
Alyssa Thomas’ actions did not result in any penalties, despite visible video evidence. Fans and commentators criticized the situation, questioning the fairness of officiating.
While the league is reviewing a technical foul Clark received in a previous game for “clapping and instigating” during a heated sequence, the lack of calls in this game remain a topic of debate. In contrast, similar situations saw technical fouls rescinded, like the case with Paige Bueckers earlier in the season.
Clark sustained a back injury during the third quarter of the game, though she made a significant impact with 19 points and eight assists before her exit.
