Texas endured a tough defeat at home this past weekend, narrowly losing 27-24 to an unranked Florida team. This setback marks Texas’ second straight loss after initially opening the season with a strong 4-0 record, including a victory over then top-ranked Ohio State.
The recent loss to Florida is particularly concerning, as the Gators competed without their starting quarterback and top wide receiver. Arch Manning played a significant role in Texas’ defeat. Although he completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and secured one touchdown, a critical late-game fumble hindered any comeback efforts.
Texas’ chances for the College Football Playoff have declined notably. As reported by Polymarket, the Longhorns’ probability of making the CFP fell to a mere 36%, a sharp drop from over 70% prior to their encounter with Florida.

Earlier in the season, Texas delivered impressive performances, defeating Ohio State and Tennessee, both ranked teams at the time. They also secured dominant wins over Texas State and UTSA. However, these recent losses have left Texas with a 4-2 record overall and a 1-2 standing in SEC matches. The team has dropped to No. 19 in the AP Top 25 after formerly holding the No. 1 position.
Despite only having two losses, facing unranked conference opponents has placed additional scrutiny on Coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns. The upcoming games are particularly challenging for Texas. They prepare to host the No. 7 Ole Miss, a 5-1 team coming off two consecutive wins, before facing Mississippi State, Missouri, LSU, Arkansas, and Texas A&M.

With five of their final six games against SEC teams holding winning records, and three being road games, Texas has minimal room for error. Another loss could jeopardize their season and playoff hopes. Texas’ failure to reach the 12-team playoff could have significant repercussions. Sarkisian and Manning began the season under pressure, with high expectations fueled by a talented roster. The inability to bounce back from consecutive losses and secure a CFP spot would be a challenging situation for the program to manage.
