James Talarico, a Democratic Senate candidate from Texas, recently received unexpected support from Barbara Bush. She is the daughter of former President George W. Bush, a prominent Republican figure. Her donation went to Lone Star Rising PAC, the primary political action committee backing Talarico’s campaign.
Despite the long-standing tension between George W. Bush and Donald Trump, Bush’s daughter has chosen to support a Democratic candidate at a crucial time for the Republican Party’s control of the U.S. Senate.
Federal Election Commission records show that Barbara Bush gave $2,500 to Lone Star Rising PAC. This amount is modest compared to other big-name donors like The Eagles’ Don Henley, who contributed $150,000. However, Texas campaign finance expert Andrew Cates highlighted the significance of Barbara Bush’s choice to donate under her known identity and not through a 501(c)(4), which allows for anonymous contributions.
Barbara Bush holds a leadership role as vice president of social impact and inclusion at the National Basketball Association. According to the George W. Bush Presidential Center, her work involves using basketball’s international reach to support humanitarian initiatives on social justice, health equity, and sustainability. Additionally, she co-founded the Global Health Corps, focusing on engaging young people in addressing global health challenges, and co-authored children’s books with her sister, Jenna Bush Hager.
James Talarico has been vocal about his opposition to large financial influences in politics. He criticizes politicians like Sen. John Cornyn and competitor Ken Paxton for allowing corporations and wealthy individuals to influence elections. Despite this stance, Talarico acknowledges that he will not limit his campaign spending efforts while Republicans utilize PACs to gain an advantage.
Fox News Digital attempted to reach out to both Barbara Bush and James Talarico’s campaign for additional comments on the donation, though no further statements were obtained.
