Amid the midterm elections, two super PACs have emerged as powerful players, each with alliances to major A.I. companies. One aligns with Anthropic, while the other is connected to OpenAI. Both are using their resources to sway the elections, causing apprehension among candidates and leading to the cancellation of some advertising efforts.
The artificial intelligence sector is funneling millions of dollars into election efforts through these super PACs. This significant financial involvement highlights the growing interest in shaping future A.I. regulations. Contributions from these groups are among the largest in the current election cycle, with expenditures nearing $24 million and additional commitments exceeding $100 million.
The rivalry between the super PACs, named Public First and Leading the Future, reflects a broader competition between Anthropic and OpenAI. Public First holds ties with Anthropic, whereas Leading the Future partners with OpenAI. Despite potentially supporting the same candidates, these super PACs refuse collaboration. Each PAC pushes its agenda, with tensions evident through public declarations against each other.
This friction has manifested in disrupted campaign strategies, including canceled ad buys and political tension among candidates. The conflict represents a wider struggle within Silicon Valley to exert influence over A.I. policies, promising a contentious future as these tech giants vie for overarching control.
“The two couldn’t have deeper disdain for one another,” remarked Cooper Teboe, a Democratic strategist. “This is a war for the future and it will be bloody.”
