The Facade of Democracy in Coup-Regimes

When a military leader assumes control of a nation, a predictable pattern often unfolds. The initial step involves the forceful capture of power, usually resulting in the incarceration or exile of political adversaries. Following these actions, an election lacking in authenticity takes place. The transition from military attire to a suit and tie signifies an attempt to project legitimacy, as the ruler claims the title of ‘president.’

This scenario recently played out in Myanmar. On July 31, President Min Aung Hlaing addressed the Union Parliament in Naypyidaw. His speech symbolized the culmination of a process that began with military dominance, followed by efforts to present a democratic facade while retaining authoritarian control.

The term ‘president’ is intended to convey a sense of democratic leadership. Yet, the underlying reality remains unchanged; the control and manipulation of political processes ensure that true democracy remains elusive. Such transitions highlight the ongoing struggle for genuine democratic governance in regions subjected to military coups.
