Widespread Cyclospora Outbreak Affects Thousands in the US

A cyclospora outbreak has emerged across several states in the United States, leading to thousands of cases. Cyclospora is a parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness, with symptoms including frequent bowel movements. Recently, a spike in these cases has been reported since the beginning of May, causing concern among health organizations.

Current Reported Statistics

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the number of laboratory-confirmed cyclosporiasis cases has reached 6,707 as of July 28. These have been identified in 45 states, resulting in 423 hospitalizations. This shows an increase of over 2,500 reported cases in just a week. Additionally, the CDC is investigating more than 11,500 suspected cases which might still require confirmation.

Investigation and Source of Outbreak

The CDC is currently investigating clusters of cyclospora cases nationwide. The most significant outbreak has been linked to shredded lettuce from Taylor Farms. This lettuce, previously served at Taco Bell outlets, was also shipped to many states, implicating a larger distribution network. As a response, Taco Bell withdrew the iceberg lettuce from their restaurants on July 17. In parallel, Taylor Farms expanded their recall of the affected lettuce originating from central Mexico. Despite this measure, the investigation into other potential contamination points continues.

State-Specific Reports

• Michigan: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has reported 10,773 cases, with 193 requiring hospitalization.
• Ohio: A rise in cases to 4,013 has been reported by the Ohio Department of Health, up from 2,576 just days earlier.
• North Carolina: The state reported 718 cases, with 24 hospitalizations, marking an increase from earlier figures.
• Missouri: Cases doubled over a week, reaching 593.
• Florida: A rise to 254 cases has been recorded by the Department of Health, from 158 previously.
• Iowa: There are 226 confirmed cases, though some involve individuals who traveled internationally.
• Virginia: The number of cases stands at 162, with a significant portion acquired domestically.

Cyclospora is a parasitic pathogen linked to food contamination. It often spreads when produce is irrigated or washed with tainted water. Infections lead to digestive issues, frequently resulting in severe diarrhea.
