During the Double or Nothing event on Sunday, AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla faced significant challenges in a four-way match. Her opponents included Jamie Hayter, Kris Statlander, and Hikaru Shida. As soon as the match began, they combined forces to target Thekla, slowing her down early.
Kris Statlander and Hikaru Shida seemed to form a temporary alliance, leaving Hayter as the outlier. However, this cooperation was short-lived. Shida interrupted a pin attempt by hitting Statlander with a kendo stick. Tensions flared, leading to a physical confrontation between the former allies.
Despite being temporarily sidelined, Thekla remained strategic. Seizing the opportunity when Shida and Hayter collided outside the ring, she targeted the disoriented Statlander. Alone in the ring, Statlander was unable to defend against Thekla’s forceful stomp, allowing Thekla to secure the pin and retain her championship.
Thekla, originally from Austria, claimed the title from Statlander during the “Dynamite” event in February. Since then, she has successfully defended her title six times.
After the match, Thekla hinted at future plans without giving details. She expressed interest in the ongoing Owen Hart Women’s Tournament, showing support for her teammate Skye Blue to win. This could indicate her future path in AEW.
