Tim Allen has shared candid thoughts about his early views on fatherhood, his regrets, and how his 30-year sobriety has influenced his life. In an interview with US Weekly, Allen explained that he initially had no desire to be a father and sees his experience with parenting as a ‘work in progress.’
He stated, ‘I never really wanted to be a dad. I joke about it on stage; I’ve just never been a real fan of children.’ Allen noted the contrast between the requirements for a driver’s license or passport versus what it takes to raise a child. Despite his reservations, his journey as a father evolved over time.
Allen is a father to two daughters: Katherine Allen from his first marriage to Laura Deibel, and Elizabeth Allen-Dick with his current wife, Jane Hajduk. During the interview, Allen mentioned Jane’s wish for more children, believing that the first two provide vital learning experiences.
Reflecting on raising Katherine, Allen admitted that he was absent often, leaving her mother to handle most parenting duties. Having grown up with seven brothers and two sisters, the dynamics of raising girls presented a new challenge for him.
He shared a focus on practical skills like financial literacy over more traditional ‘girl stuff’ like fashion. He acknowledged learning the importance of a father-daughter bond, noting that his older daughter occasionally recalls his advice, showing she had been listening all along.
Allen also discussed how his nearly three decades of sobriety have impacted his family life. While he was not sober during Katherine’s formative years, he communicated openly with her and ensured she understood the changes.
In contrast, his younger daughter, Elizabeth, has only known him as a sober father. Allen has sought to make amends and improve their relationships.
With the upcoming release of ‘Toy Story 5’ on June 19, Allen reminisced about his past. After losing focus following college, he got involved in criminal activities, which led to two years in prison. During this time, he turned to reading about successful individuals, refocusing his life goals.
These experiences have shaped his determination to avoid past mistakes and maintain a positive trajectory for himself and his family.
