NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — President Donald Trump addressed the graduates of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, praising their heroism and selflessness. He emphasized that the cadets will face further challenges in their military careers.
This event marked the first time Trump delivered a commencement speech at a military academy during an ongoing conflict, referencing the current war with Iran, now in its 12th week. Trump spoke of the determination required for America’s ‘first defenders’ and ‘first responders.’
During his address, Trump mentioned the progress in the conflict with Iran, noting it as a success for the U.S. He raised the question of whether to conclude the conflict or wait for Iran to agree to terms. The president had contemplated renewed strikes on Iran but opted for giving negotiations more time.
The commencement ceremony took place under intense heat, with at least one attendee requiring medical assistance. The lack of shade prompted requests for seating under tents. Chilled water bottles were freely distributed but soon became warm.
Trump expressed pride in addressing the academy for the second time, mentioning the potential for a third visit to maintain the record. He highlighted a time of national resurgence in strength, morale, and confidence, declaring ‘America is back’ and criticizing past political leadership. Trump’s speech diverged from typical nonpolitical remarks at military graduations by promoting his administration’s policies.
Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Air Force Academy’s commencement. Trump also advised the cadets to ‘just enjoy your life,’ emphasizing the Coast Guard’s importance during disasters like hurricanes.
