Simi Valley Wildfire Updates
A massive wildfire that led to the evacuation of thousands from Simi Valley has reached 22% containment, as reported by officials on Wednesday. The Ventura County Fire Department warns that shifts in wind, low humidity, and dry conditions could heighten fire activity through Thursday.
The blaze, which ignited around 11 a.m. on Monday near Sandy Avenue, has destroyed one home, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. By Wednesday evening, it had scorched 2,115 acres, with evacuation orders impacting about 17,000 residents.
Approximately 900 firefighters are battling the Sandy fire across challenging terrain. Ground crews focus on establishing fire lines to improve containment, while air tankers drop retardant to curb the fire’s advance. “We’re here with Cal Fire, L.A. City, and L.A. County Fire,” stated Andrew Dowd, a department representative. “We have helicopters, dozers, and engines, delivering a robust response.”
“We have resources on scene and we’re handling everything we can.” — Trevor Johnson, Ventura County Fire Department spokesperson
Near Albertson Motorway, crews tackle hot spots and solidify the fire’s perimeter. Meanwhile, unburned areas may produce visible smoke. East of the fire near Sequoia Avenue, efforts are underway to keep the blaze from spreading into the canyon.
The cause of the fire may be linked to a tractor incident. A driver reportedly struck a rock on their property, sparking the fire, according to Sgt. Rick Morton of the Simi Valley Police Department. The incident occurred near Sandy Avenue, the reported origin of the fire.
National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Lewis noted that offshore winds are expected to continue into the weekend. Various local road closures are in place, impacting areas such as Bell Canyon Road, Katherine Road, and Santa Susana Pass Road.
An evacuation alert remains for regions including Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Chatsworth, West Hills, and Lake Manor.
Other fires across Southern California also show progress in containment. The Verona fire in Riverside County has burned 600 acres with 30% containment. The Bain fire in the same county spans 1,456 acres and is 34% contained. On Santa Rosa Island, the fire there covers 17,554 acres with 44% containment.
