Trump Campaigns in Alaska Supporting Sullivan and Wilson
President Donald Trump’s visit to Alaska
President Donald Trump visited Alaska to support Republican Senator Dan Sullivan and Bernadette Wilson in their electoral races. His trip is aimed at helping Republicans maintain control of Congress.
Support for Bernadette Wilson
Trump endorsed Bernadette Wilson in the crowded gubernatorial race. He urged all Republicans to unite behind her, calling Wilson a “fantastic choice” to succeed Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy.
Wilson emerged as the primary’s top Republican, yet must overcome a divided Republican field. Trump encouraged Treg Taylor and Dave Bronson to drop out, emphasizing the challenge posed by having three Republicans against one Democrat, Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins.
Wilson expressed gratitude for Trump’s support on social media and anticipates collaborating with his administration.
Ranked Choice Voting Criticism
Trump criticized Alaska’s ranked choice voting system, deeming it a “phony rigged deal.” He extended his well wishes to Wilson, acknowledging the difficulties she faces.
In November, Alaskans will vote on whether to repeal ranked choice and open primary systems. A similar measure narrowly failed previously.
Backing Senator Dan Sullivan
Trump’s visit aims to bolster Sullivan’s campaign as he seeks a third Senate term. Sullivan faces a challenge from Democrat Mary Peltola. Alaska has traditionally favored Republicans, with Democrats not winning a Senate race since 2008 or the governorship since 1998.
Peltola’s campaign highlights issues like rising gas prices and inflation, posing potential advantages for Democrats.
Trump emphasized Sullivan as the “real Dan Sullivan” to differentiate him from another candidate by a similar name, Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher. He accused Democrats of creating confusion among voters.
Senator Sullivan criticized Peltola’s energy stance, arguing she prefers to import rather than drill oil and gas domestically.
A Packed Rally
Trump’s rally in Wasilla attracted large crowds. Videos showed attendees gathering in cold temperatures, with approximately 10,000 others watching outside.
Trump reiterated his unwavering commitment to the visit, referencing his family ties to Alaska.
Governor Dunleavy praised Trump as potentially the best ally in Alaska’s history.
Trump Pardoning Alaska Businessmen
During his speech, Trump granted pardons to Alaskan businessmen Zachary Czubak and Patrick Fleming, co-owners of Arm Rippin Toys, who admitted to tampering emission monitoring equipment.
Trump condemned the prosecution as excessive, suggesting a potential 10-year jail sentence was unjust.
The businessmen thanked Trump, with Fleming promoting Sullivan and Representative Nick Begich.
Alaska LNG Project and Investments
Trump shared updates on the Alaska LNG project, involving a proposed pipeline from Alaska’s North Slope. Taiwan has committed to purchasing 30% of the gas output and investing over $4 billion.
He also discussed a proposed $162 million investment in high-speed internet across Alaska, pending approval later in October.
Protester Disruption
Trump’s speech was momentarily disrupted by a protester, who was later escorted out amid mixed reactions from the crowd.
Trump jokingly suggested that the protester’s parents were Trump supporters.
Upcoming Election
Alaska’s general election is set for November 3, with early voting beginning October 19.
