Currently, Kirk Cousins holds the position of starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders. However, first overall pick Fernando Mendoza is clearly the team’s long-term plan. Last week, in a 45-17 defeat to the New England Patriots, Mendoza had his initial exposure to NFL gameplay, completing 6 out of 8 passes for 48 yards during the final moments.
When Mendoza steps into the role of QB1, he will require more offensive support than the Raiders presently offer. Among the team’s top four receivers, three are either tight ends or running backs: Brock Bowers, Michael Mayer, and Ashton Jeanty. Although Vegas’ leading receiver, Tre Tucker, has recorded decent statistics in five games—19 catches, 274 yards, and one touchdown—he has yet to establish himself as a No. 1 wide receiver in the league. This situation prompted Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report to suggest that the Raiders consider trade possibilities.
Knox recently advocated for the Raiders to investigate the availability of Brian Thomas Jr., a wide receiver for the Jaguars. Thomas’ role has diminished in Jacksonville, potentially making a trade feasible.
“The return that Arizona got for (Marvin) Harrison Jr. could change Jacksonville’s stance (on trading Thomas Jr.),” Knox wrote. “Thomas was a revelation for the Jaguars as a rookie but has steadily fallen out of the game plan since. … With rookie receiver Josh Cameron (117 yards, 2 TDs) beginning to gain traction, cashing in Thomas now could make a ton of sense.”
Knox implies that the Cardinals’ deal for Harrison Jr. could influence the Jaguars to consider trading Thomas. The receiver proved his worth in his rookie year with 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns but has since seen a reduced role. As rookie Josh Cameron starts to emerge, the Jaguars might opt to negotiate.
The Jags would likely seek a return similar to what the Cardinals obtained for Harrison, with Thomas being only 24 years old. Knox speculates that Arizona could receive 2027 second- and sixth-round picks, paralleling Arizona’s deal with the Houston Texans for Harrison Jr.
If Jacksonville sets such a price, it could be advantageous for Vegas to contemplate acquiring Thomas. Having already demonstrated superior performance in his rookie season, Thomas offers greater potential than any prospect the Raiders might draft with the 2027 second-round pick. Prospective draftees include Rutgers’ K.J. Duff, Florida State’s Duce Robinson, Texas’ Ryan Wingo, Indiana’s Nick Marsh, and South Carolina’s Nyck Harbor.
