President Donald Trump recently stepped in to address the red card controversy involving Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. Trump reached out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, seeking a reconsideration of the decision made in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a source confirmed.

The exact details of Trump’s conversation with Infantino remain undisclosed. Trump has previously praised Infantino as a “great leader in sports” and personal friend.

In a surprising turn, Balogun, who scored three goals in the tournament so far, has been cleared to play despite his red card. This decision aligns with FIFA’s disciplinary code, which permits suspension of penalties in certain conditions. The code specifies that if a player with a suspended sanction repeats the offense, the original penalty will be enforced along with any new penalties.

FIFA has ruled Balogun’s suspension will last for a probationary period of one year. U.S. Soccer expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating that their focus is now on the upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle. They are counting on continued support from their fans.

However, Belgium’s team expressed astonishment at FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to play. The Royal Belgian Football Association is examining possible actions to counter the ruling.

Initially, Team USA manager Mauricio Pochettino and his staff considered tactical adjustments in Balogun’s absence. Now, with his clearance, they intend to deploy their usual lineup against Belgium.

While Team USA prepares to face Belgium, Trump and Infantino have plans to attend the World Cup Final in New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19. Trump is expected to present the World Cup trophy to the winning team’s captain, an event Infantino mentioned on “Fox & Friends.”

If the USMNT defeats Belgium, they will become the second team in U.S. history to advance to the quarterfinals. Their next opponent would be the winner of the match between Portugal and Spain.
