Water Safety Advice and a Tragic Pool Incident
Dr. Soma’s Water Safety Advice for Families
Dr. Gauthama Soma, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and mother, emphasizes the importance of water safety for families during Memorial Day weekend. Her primary advice includes maintaining ‘touch supervision’ for children near water. She stresses that drowning can happen silently, and accidental deaths in young children are largely avoidable.
Dr. Soma also advises that children should wear Coast Guard-approved life vests. Additionally, she encourages parents to learn CPR to be prepared for emergencies.
Arizona Pool Incident and Legal Proceedings
Arizona police have proposed felony child abuse charges against the parents of an 18-month-old boy, identified as Vincent Fiordilino, who nearly drowned during a Super Bowl party. The incident occurred after the parents reportedly used marijuana, leading to a lack of supervision.
During the party, Vincent disappeared from view and was later found face down in a backyard pool. Police reports state that the parents admitted to using marijuana, which impaired their ability to supervise. This lapse in attention resulted in Vincent’s unnoticed fall into the pool.
Medical Oversight and Unusual Discovery
After Vincent was rescued from the water, first responders took him to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where a doctor initially declared him deceased. Hours later, medical personnel discovered he was alive and breathing, even after being sent to the hospital’s morgue.
The medical staff noted agonal breathing, a reflex that can occur near death. A nurse later detected a pulse after Vincent had been pronounced dead. Despite this, the physician maintained his decision, instructing staff to cease lifesaving efforts.
Hospital Review and Fundraising Efforts
In response to the incident, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center conducted a review of the care provided. A hospital spokesperson stated they are committed to patient safety and are working with the family.
A GoFundMe campaign describes Vincent’s survival as a miracle, stating his organs began to shut down upon arrival at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Initial tests showed potential brain damage, but subsequent evaluations found no such damage. Vincent continues to undergo therapy and requires medical monitoring for recovery.
