President Donald Trump spoke highly of Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., suggesting that he would welcome the Pennsylvania Democrat into the Republican Party. After disembarking Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews, Trump was queried by a reporter about whether he had discussed party affiliation with Fetterman.
Trump expressed openness to such a change, stating, “I’d love to see it. I think he’s great.” He acknowledged the challenges Fetterman might face in securing the Democratic nomination, adding, “It’s going to be hard for him to get the nomination as a Democrat, but I’d love to have him as a Republican.”
“He’s a very solid person,” Trump shared, praising Fetterman’s common sense and intelligence. He commended Fetterman’s “magnificent parents,” with whom he had previously spoken.
Trump suggested a potential party switch could enhance Fetterman’s political prospects. “If you look at the polls, he does better as a Republican than he does as a Democrat,” Trump said.
Sen. Fetterman’s noticeable deviations from typical Democratic positions have fueled speculation over his political future. Despite voting with Senate Democrats nearly 90% of the time since he joined the Senate in 2023, his alignment has dropped to just under 81% during the current session of Congress, as reported by Fox News Digital.
Such actions include dissenting on key issues like the Iran war and immigration. He has utilized Republican fundraising tools and maintains a close association with Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala. A video featuring Fetterman introducing Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., marked his presence at the Republican Midterm Convention.
Fetterman’s slip-up at the Texas Tribune’s TribFest, where he mistakenly labeled himself a lifelong Republican, further stirred conversation. “Because I’m a lifelong Republican,” he said, before catching his mistake. “I guarantee you that will break through. That will get clipped.”
Fox News Digital has sought comment from Fetterman’s office regarding these developments.
