President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has directed the Pentagon to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. He cited the high costs and the exercises’ perceived threat to North Korea. Trump mentioned his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a factor in his decision.
Via social media, Trump described the scheduled exercises as inappropriate and hostile towards North Korea. He noted that North Korea has remained non-threatening and respectful during his presidency. As a result, Trump instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to significantly reduce the planned exercises, which are set to begin this week.
Trump also shared that South Korea declined to join the U.S. in efforts against Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The military drills, planned to involve 18,000 South Korean troops over 11 days, aim to enhance preparedness against threats from North Korea.
North Korea recently criticized the exercises, calling them a rehearsal for war, leading to greater instability in the region. Such rhetoric is typical from North Korea ahead of major U.S.-South Korean drills. Experts suggest North Korea uses these exercises as justification for advancing its weapons programs. This strengthens Kim Jong Un’s position domestically and internationally.
The U.S. military stated the exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, emphasize the alliance’s role as a cornerstone of regional peace and reaffirm the commitment between the U.S. and South Korea.
Recent activities have seen North Korea resuming ballistic missile tests, which are globally prohibited. Earlier this month, a short-range missile was launched, marking the first such activity since June. North Korea’s continued missile development aims to bolster its bargaining power in negotiations with the U.S.
Previously, Trump and Kim met three times to discuss North Korea’s nuclear program. These talks stalled in 2019, with experts believing Kim seeks stronger leverage through expanded arsenals. Despite past disruptions, Trump has shown interest in resuming dialogue with North Korea while expressing optimism about his rapport with Kim.
This isn’t Trump’s first attempt to alter these military exercises. In 2018, he called them provocative during talks with Kim in Singapore, proposing a halt to save money unless negotiations falter. Trump’s recent announcement aligns with his ongoing interest in redefining U.S.-North Korea relations.
