Trump Updates on Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Repairs, Blames Vandalism Despite Dismissal of Charges
President Donald Trump announced that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is 70 percent filled after repairs. He threatened legal action against anyone vandalizing the site. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated, “Any Vandals that try to prove the point otherwise, will GO TO JAIL!” Enhanced security measures, including cameras, were mentioned.
The statement revives a debate over damage sources to the pool’s lining. Federal prosecutors had dismissed charges against former Olympian David Hearn, attributing damage to rushed construction, not vandalism. Hearn’s attorney, Norm Eisen, criticized Trump’s stance, highlighting wasted public resources.
Despite Trump’s claims, Interior Department documents showed construction errors caused damage. Prosecutors noted the widespread damage was unlikely caused by vandals, as extensive damage appeared even in areas difficult for vandals to reach.
Repair work on the Reflecting Pool began after a previous announcement in April. Initial estimates ranged between $1.5 million and $2 million, but costs increased, and issues arose with the pool’s new lining. The National Park Service confirmed that temporary cloudiness is expected with the refilling process.
The DOJ originally charged Hearn with property destruction. Yet, new information from the Interior Department revealed that the damage resulted from poor contractor work. As Hearn’s case was dismissed, Trump insisted on vandalism claims, citing video footage and Fox News coverage as evidence.
Overall, the situation exemplifies conflicting narratives regarding the Reflecting Pool’s issues. Trump’s firm stance on vandalism continues to stir controversy, despite evidence pointing to construction faults.
