President Donald Trump is pushing for Muslim-majority nations to become part of the Abraham Accords as a prerequisite for engaging in developing agreements with Iran. These accords aim to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab and Muslim-majority countries.
Efforts to Expand the Abraham Accords
Trump announced on Saturday that he had called several regional leaders, including those from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, and Jordan. His message was clear: these nations should, at a minimum, sign onto the Abraham Accords to acknowledge the efforts of the United States in facilitating this diplomatic progress.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the significance of these nations jointly embracing the accords, highlighting the complexity of the diplomatic efforts involved.
Engagement with Regional Leaders
Trump’s strategy also includes discussions with the leaders of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain, the first two nations to sign the accords in 2020. He hinted at the potential inclusion of Iran in the accords, a notion he finds significant and groundbreaking.
Future Diplomatic Movements
Additionally, Trump mentioned that numerous regional leaders expressed a willingness to welcome Iran into the Abraham Accords once the necessary documents are signed. This integration could mark a major diplomatic shift.
However, according to U.S. and Israeli officials, there’s an expectation that the UAE will hold off on advancing the issue until after Israel’s elections in September.
