Pope Leo unveiled a new Vatican encyclical, ‘Magnifica Humanitas,’ highlighting the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. The Vatican warns that AI risks becoming a tool for domination, exclusion, and death unless moral boundaries are placed on its development by governments and institutions.
Entering the global debate, the Vatican joins discussions on AI as governments and tech companies rapidly advance powerful AI systems with few international regulations. Pope Leo referenced Pope Leo XIII’s 1891 encyclical ‘Rerum Novarum,’ which tackled worker exploitation during the Industrial Revolution, indicating AI as another transformative force jeopardizing human dignity.
‘Today we face a transformation of similar magnitude, with perhaps even greater consequences,’ the Pope stated.

The pontiff highlighted the threat of increasingly autonomous weapon systems beyond human control. Additionally, he pointed out potential biases in AI data that could hinder access to healthcare, employment, and security. He likened AI governance to nuclear arms control, emphasizing that AI should benefit everyone and serve the common good.
The Pope argued that disarming AI isn’t sufficient. He called upon governments and institutions to develop systems anchored in trust and human dignity, drawing parallels to rebuilding efforts after floods in Peru by restoring trust and hope.
Why a Classical Education May Be Crucial for Humanity’s Future in the AI Era
Pope Leo XIV delivered the Angelus prayer at the Vatican, cautioning that increasing violence in the Middle East could become an ‘irreparable abyss.’
He further articulated the church’s stance on humanity and technology, stating, ‘The person bears within him- or herself a freedom, an interiority, and a vocation to love and worship that no machine can replace.’
The Vatican aims to insert moral theology within the largely secular technological race.
‘Stay awake,’ urged the Pope, advising humanity not to relinquish moral judgment to machines.
