Trump’s Strategy in U.S.-Iran Conflict Mirrors Gaza Approach

The United States and Iran are engaged in negotiations to end their ongoing conflict, following President Trump’s strategic method that he has applied previously in the Middle East. The current approach involves reaching a cease-fire and delaying the resolution of more complex issues. This strategy has produced mixed outcomes in the region, as seen in Gaza.

Recently, President Trump facilitated a truce between Israel and Hamas, a group with ties to Iran, following a destructive conflict. However, the next phase of the agreement, aimed at disarming Hamas and aiding Gaza’s reconstruction, is experiencing delays. Experts warn that using a similar method in talks with Iran may encounter similar hurdles.

The latest proposal from the Trump administration mainly addresses the end of Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, an essential channel for oil and gas transit. After the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in February, the blockade caused energy prices to rise, affecting voters in America. Ending the blockade is a priority, with more complex issues like Iran’s nuclear ambitions, missile stockpiles, and regional militia support to be discussed later.

Michael Koplow, a policy expert from the Israel Policy Forum in New York, stated that while a phased negotiation process may have advantages, it also raises concerns. It allows President Trump to declare a win without permanently resolving the core challenges. Additionally, analysts note that Iran’s leaders have grown more assertive due to the military conflict, making upcoming discussions potentially challenging.
