Americans planning trips to Brazil should be aware of safety risks and exercise caution. The U.S. State Department’s advisory, updated on August 31, maintains a Level 2 warning, advising increased caution due to crime and kidnapping concerns.
The State Department highlights safety issues such as violent crime, which is prevalent in urban areas during both day and night. Common crimes include murder, armed robbery, and carjacking. Travelers are cautioned about criminals using dating apps or approaches at bars to drug and rob individuals.
In addition to the Level 2 advisory, there are Level 4 Do Not Travel warnings for specific areas. This includes international land borders, informal housing areas, and certain locations around the capital, Brasília.
U.S. citizens should be particularly alert at night around beaches, bars, and transport centers. Although kidnapping for ransom is rare, it occasionally happens. While Brazilians are the primary targets, foreigners are also at risk.
Travelers should be mindful of their environment, avoid flashing wealth, and carefully monitor their drinks. It’s advised to refuse food or drinks from strangers and stay cautious about online dating scams.
It’s also noted that public transit passengers are at higher risk of robbery, especially on buses at night.
Despite the warnings, Brazil’s appealing beaches and cities continue to attract tourists, although vigilance is strongly recommended.
