A significant event took place at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point when a 21-foot steel beam from the South Tower of the World Trade Center was delivered. This beam, weighing 16,900 pounds, is part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Steel Across America tour, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. West Point marked the 33rd stop on this nationwide remembrance tour.
Lt. Gen. James B. Bartholomees III, West Point Superintendent, emphasized the symbolic linkage between the courage demonstrated by the first responders on 9/11 and the generations of Americans, including West Point graduates, who chose to serve thereafter. He stated, “As we approach the 25th anniversary of 9/11, this piece of steel reminds us of the courage of first responders like Stephen Siller and the countless Americans who answered the call in the years that followed.”
The ceremony drew together cadets, faculty, staff, and guests with a procession by the NYPD, FDNY, and Port Authority Police Department. The program included the national anthem, an invocation, and “Amazing Grace” during a moment of reflection.
Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of Tunnel to Towers and brother of fallen 9/11 firefighter Stephen Siller, recounted his brother’s bravery. He explained that Stephen was off duty when the attacks happened and ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, carrying 60 pounds of gear to help at the World Trade Center. Frank Siller declared, “Duty, Honor, Country: those values connect West Point cadets, Stephen, and first responders all across this country.”
Tunnel to Towers, founded in Stephen Siller’s memory, supports families of fallen first responders and veterans by offering mortgage-free homes and constructing specially adapted homes for injured service members.
The arrival of this beam at West Point created an emotional connection among many attendees, linking the first responders of 9/11 to the military personnel who served overseas in subsequent conflicts. Col. Dan Steuwe reflected on a symbolic image of a firefighter passing the American flag to a service member, representing the unity in serving a greater cause.
Kelly Heffner, a supporter of the foundation, shared her emotional response upon touching the steel beam, expressing how strongly it brings back memories and holds the essence of the day.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of a commemorative steel flag to West Point, symbolizing dedication to the Tunnel to Towers mission. The flag, showcasing New York City’s skyline and Twin Towers, incorporates World Trade Center steel.
After the ceremony, attendees were invited to reflect beside the steel beam. The Steel Across America tour will continue its journey, next visiting the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston.
