Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently highlighted the progress Ukrainian forces are making against Russia. These improvements suggest a shift in their war prospects, especially after concerns about decreased U.S. support might have given Russia an edge. On May 19, Zelensky noted significant changes in favor of Kyiv, which seemed unlikely earlier this year. The context was different then, with stalled peace talks led by the U.S., lessened support from the Trump administration, and relentless Russian attacks targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure.
Despite reduced U.S. aid, Ukraine’s use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has counterbalanced the resources. Successful drone strikes both behind the front lines and within Russia are a source of hope for Kyiv. Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili told Newsweek that the war’s dynamics are increasingly in Ukraine’s favor. This is a stark contrast to the previous year’s struggles.
Ukraine Enhances Drone Production and Operations
Ukraine’s defense ministry reported a boost in the production of various drone systems over the past year. These include reconnaissance and strike drones and fiber-optic FPV drones effective along the frontline. Matthew Arnold from the London School of Economics noted that Ukraine is confident, even with reduced U.S. aid, due to its rapid and successful adaptation and deployment of drones compared to Russia.
Revishvili highlighted that Ukraine has stepped up its strike campaign against Russian logistics, specifically at depths within occupied territories like southeastern Ukraine. There has been an increase in operations aimed at Russian troop elimination and disrupting logistics, adding pressure on the Russian economy. Establishing a corridor linking Crimea to Rostov was a Russian goal that Ukraine opposed during its 2023 counteroffensive.
Next Six Months Are Crucial
General Andriy Biletskyi of Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps expressed that maintaining momentum could lead to significant gains, forcing Russia to abandon parts of the Donetsk region. Russian demands include Kyiv ceding the Donetsk oblast, which Ukraine rejects. Biletskyi observed that the Russian army is worn out and incapable of making notable breakthroughs, complicated by the disruption of Starlink satellite service for Russian forces.
Ukraine’s strategy involves defining where they can improve positions and take strategic points, influencing Russia in future talks. The next six months are critical, according to Biletskyi, with potential challenges for Russia if Ukraine sustains and expands its tactical operations. Revishvili noted that this could disrupt Russian operations significantly.
Ukrainian Gains and Strikes
Zelensky reported that Ukraine had reclaimed nearly 230 square miles this year, stark in contrast to Russia’s slowed advances. The Institute for the Study of War stated that Kyiv is challenging the war’s positional nature and may stage limited mechanized assaults. Ukrainian middle strikes against Russian air defenses and logistics have significantly increased since February, affecting Russia’s transport and troop movements.
Ukrainian forces targeted Russian facilities like the oil refinery in Volgograd and Moscow infrastructure. Arnold stated that Ukraine aims to undermine Putin’s belief in limited costs to Russia’s economy or people, with their strategy impacting the Russian homeland.
Putin’s Stance
Despite setbacks, Putin believes his forces can capture the Donbas region by autumn. He called for Ukrainian troops to surrender, citing a collapse, although this might be influenced by misleading reports from his military commanders. Some regions, like Kostiantynivka, present challenges for Ukraine due to Russian infiltration tactics.
Revishvili explained that the situation in Donetsk has political significance, beyond military outcomes. Russia must face both military and political challenges to achieve its desired territorial control.
