In August 2004, a man was discovered unconscious behind a Burger King in Georgia. Initially, reports depicted him as naked and injured. Upon waking, he claimed to have no memory of his identity. Filmmakers now aim to solve the mystery of the years he went missing.
The Investigation Discovery Docuseries
On May 25, Investigation Discovery (ID) debuts a four-part docuseries titled “The Many Lives of Benjaman Kyle.” This series chronicles filmmakers Eric and Shannon Evangelista as they assist the man, who alleged he had a rare amnesia, in reconstructing his lost identity. However, following his identification in 2015 as William Burgess Powell, the investigation took an unforeseen twist. The filmmakers are uncertain if Powell disputes their findings.
An initial breakthrough occurred with the discovery of a missing person report from Indiana, dated March 1976, detailing Powell’s sudden departure.
From Disappearance to Discovery
After vanishing from Indiana in 1976, William Burgess Powell re-emerged nearly three decades later, behind a Burger King in Georgia, lacking any memory of his past. Known as Benjaman Kyle, Powell has not faced any criminal charges, nor does he have a criminal record, according to reports.
His current location remains unknown, and the filmmakers urge those with information to contact Hot Snakes Media, their production company. Shannon Evangelista revealed their ongoing effort, stating, “We’re seeking public help to understand where he was from 1983 when his Social Security earnings ceased, to 2004.”
Hospital personnel dubbed him “B.K. Doe” and he started referring to himself as Benjaman Kyle. Despite a diagnosis of retrograde amnesia, Eric Evangelista remained skeptical, questioning its legitimacy based on Powell’s reluctance to cooperate fully. He noted, “His amnesia felt outdated, like those depicted in old films. He was resistant to aid.”
Exploring Powell’s History and Connections
The Evangelistas, both seasoned in investigative work, showed determination in reconnecting Powell to his family and seeking clarity on his identity. Yet, their efforts intensified the mystery, leading to unexpected revelations and uncertainties about his true past.
Powell, now 77, claimed to recall around 23 memories from the mid-80s. Traveling through Colorado during filming, he jested about the location’s potential for crime concealment, unsettling the crew.
Producer Alexander Block remarked on these morbid jokes, while Shannon noted, “He’d say concerning things, making it clear we needed more professional input. So, we consulted Ken Maxwell, a former FBI agent.”
Inside the Cold Case and Theories
Maxwell shared that a key lead emerged with an Indiana missing person report from 1976. It described Powell’s nocturnal escape from Lafayette and the subsequent abandonment, with removed plates, of his car.
Removing plates and fleeing to Colorado suggests attempts to avoid detection, according to law enforcement experience.
Maxwell and the filmmakers reviewed Powell’s medical records from his Burger King discovery, exposing discrepancies in his account of being attacked.
While the idea of his possible ties to crime surfaced, no evidence has publicly linked him to criminal activities. Maxwell emphasized corroboration, yet no definitive links to homicide emerged despite reports suggesting Powell mingled with unsavory figures.
Shannon last engaged with Powell in 2016 but later learned he had vacated known residences, leaving his current status a mystery. Speculation has placed him near Lafayette, given his limited financial means.
Further insights indicate Powell might have been a computer expert, allowing him to hide effectively. New theories developed, yet the ingenuity of his evasion persists. While the investigation’s focus continues, many questions about Powell’s life and identity remain unanswered.
Maxwell highlighted the difficulty of tracing someone deliberately staying off the radar, noting the absence of a paper trail from 1983 to 2004. Eric Evangelista remains committed to uncovering Powell’s hidden history, determined to learn more about his life and connections.
