Voter Concerns Rise Over Gas Prices and Economy
A recent Fox News poll reveals that 61% of voters consider rising gasoline prices a major concern. The national average for regular gasoline has surpassed $4.40 per gallon, creating financial strain for many across the United States. According to AAA, Thursday’s average was $4.4386, marking an increase from $4.3672 on Wednesday. The average was $4.2770 last week and $4.0636 last month.
The economic pressure comes as President Donald Trump minimizes the impact of these increases, attributing them to the ongoing conflict with Iran. In North Carolina, Trump described the price hike as a small cost for recent achievements. He remained optimistic, suggesting prices would decrease once the conflict resolves.
However, many voters emphasize their rising anxiety. The Fox News Poll indicates that 61% believe gas prices are a significant issue today—as opposed to 48% two years ago. Diesel prices have also climbed to $6.31, causing distress among farmers and motorists in states like California, where prices near $10 per gallon.
Poll Insights
The survey reveals 63% of registered voters feel the Trump administration has worsened the economy. Among various political alignments, 73% of independents and 95% of Democrats share this sentiment, while 26% of Republicans agree. A majority of 55% trust Democrats more to manage inflation and pricing, compared to 40% who favor Republicans in these areas.
Apart from fuel costs, other financial burdens concern voters. Grocery prices trouble 62%, healthcare costs frighten 52%, and housing expenses worry 54%. The poll finds that 34% see the cost of living as America’s most pressing issue.
President Trump’s approval rating stands at 39%, taking into account his approach to inflation where he fares poorly with a 24% approval and 74% disapproval.
Craig Agranoff, a political professor from Florida Atlantic University, asserted that the challenge of $4.40 gasoline is significant for Republicans. Voter sentiment over daily expenses will play a crucial role in the forthcoming midterm elections, which historically challenge the incumbent president’s party.
Political Dynamics
President Trump has pledged to support Republican candidates for the midterms by campaigning for 35 key seats. Affordability concerns remain a hot topic, intertwining with rising gas prices. On social media, Trump assigned the blame for recent price spikes to his successor, President Joe Biden, while assuring gas prices will decline post-conflict with Iran.
Previous record gas prices occurred on June 14, 2022, hitting $5.0165 while Biden was president. The White House has yet to respond to these escalating concerns.
