During their first World Cup match, Cape Verde impressed by holding a 0-0 draw against Spain on Monday. Goalkeeper Vozinha showed his skill and determination, making crucial saves throughout the match.
In the 39th minute, Spain almost took the lead. They sent a pass down the left side, leading to a close-range opportunity in front of the net. Vozinha faced Ferran Torres, who struck the ball against the crossbar. As the ball rebounded, Mikel Oyarzabal attempted to score with a header, but Vozinha quickly blocked the shot and cleared the danger. Although the play was flagged for offside, it highlighted Vozinha’s dedication and skill.
Vozinha made seven official saves, helping Cape Verde secure a memorable point in their World Cup debut. Despite Spain’s high FIFA ranking and impressive roster, they couldn’t break down Cape Verde’s defense.
Before this match, few knew of Vozinha, whose full name is Josimar José Évora Dias. Born and raised in Cape Verde, he earned the nickname ‘Vozinha,’ meaning ‘voice,’ from his grandparents. His professional journey has taken him to clubs in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Portugal.
The game saw Spain dominate statistical categories. They outshot Cape Verde 27 to 6, led in shots on goal 7 to 1, and had more corner kicks (11-1). Spain also controlled ball possession, holding it for 74% of the game. However, Cape Verde’s defense, with Vozinha at the helm, managed to withstand Spain’s onslaught.
Despite Spain’s attacking efforts, Vozinha’s performance stood out. He even made an impressive fingertip save off a corner, keeping Spain from scoring. In the second half, with the introduction of Lamine Yamal, Spain hoped to find a breakthrough, but Vozinha and his team held firm.
Following this historic match, Cape Verde fans celebrated outside the stadium, chanting and waving flags. Their presence was felt, and their achievement recognized globally.
