Mike Vrabel achieved notable success with the Tennessee Titans, leading the team to the playoffs three times as head coach. However, a Super Bowl appearance remained elusive. The 2019 season saw the Titans reach the AFC Championship Game, only to fall to the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 35-24.
Vrabel found immediate triumph with the New England Patriots in his first year, guiding the team to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the Patriots were defeated 29-13 in February.
During a recent segment on Terron Armstead’s show “The Set,” Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons expressed his envy over Vrabel’s swift success in New England. “Was I surprised? Um, man, I think we all would be surprised if this guy, first year in New England, they go straight to the Super Bowl. First off, I’m jealous as hell. Like what? … I was just with you four years, and you couldn’t get me to the Super Bowl?” Simmons commented, as reported by NFL Media.
While Tennessee’s defense was strong under Vrabel, New England benefited from Drake Maye, a quarterback with MVP credentials.
Following Vrabel’s departure, the Titans experienced challenging seasons, posting a 3-14 record in the past two years. The team is hopeful that new head coach Robert Saleh will bring positive changes.
This offseason, Vrabel’s leadership qualities faced scrutiny, particularly regarding his player relationships amidst off-field issues. Despite criticisms, Simmons defended Vrabel’s ability to connect with players. “One of the things when you build that relationship off the football field and I … think that’s the biggest thing with Vrabel, man,” Simmons stated. “And I can feel this, it’s the same with Saleh.”
Simmons emphasized the importance of off-field relationships. “When you can build a relationship with your players off the football field and not just when you touch that football field, they going to play as hard as they can for you. That’s what Vrabel brings, bro.” The Titans aim to harness this strength as they approach the start of training camp after a challenging spring.
