Brazil’s hopes for the World Cup title ended after a loss to Norway in the Round of 16. The match on Sunday highlighted Erling Haaland’s strong performance, particularly in the second half.
The first half ended with a 0-0 draw. However, in the 79th minute, Haaland broke the deadlock with a powerful header, putting Norway ahead 1-0. He scored again at the 90-minute mark, securing a 2-0 lead for Norway.
Brazil made several substitutions in the second half, including bringing in Neymar at age 34. Neymar managed to score a penalty during stoppage time, narrowing the score to 2-1. Despite this goal, time ran out for Brazil to equalize. This match marked the end of Neymar’s World Cup journey.
After the game, Neymar reflected on his career. He had made his international debut in 2010 at MetLife Stadium and decided to retire from international football after the match.
Neymar’s World Cup career spanned four tournaments: 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026. In his 15 matches, he accumulated 1,224 minutes on the field, scoring nine goals and assisting four others. Notably, Brazil reached the semifinals in 2014, with Neymar earning the Bronze Boot.
Currently, Neymar plays for Santos in Brazil’s Serie A, with four goals and two assists in eight starts this season.
Brazil last won the World Cup in 2002, continuing their 24-year wait for another title. Meanwhile, Norway looks formidable and will face the winner of the Mexico vs. England match in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11.
