The Washington Commanders are facing a significant setback as star wide receiver Terry McLaurin is ruled out for the remainder of the season. Coach Dan Quinn confirmed that McLaurin has torn his left patellar tendon, which will require surgery.
During a press conference, Quinn emphasized McLaurin’s contributions both on and off the field. He mentioned the impact McLaurin had from training camp through the season and highlighted his tenacity by stating, “For him to even start the game like he did was significant.”

McLaurin, age 31, sustained the injury during the Commanders’ 23-17 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. The injury occurred in the first quarter while running a route, leading to McLaurin being taken off the field with an air cast on his left leg.
Throughout his eight-year career with the Commanders, McLaurin has been recognized as a two-time Pro Bowler. This season, he managed 15 receptions totaling 230 yards and scored one touchdown across five games.

McLaurin’s overall career statistics include 513 catches, amounting to 7,191 yards and 42 touchdowns. Before the 2025 season, he agreed to a three-year extension valued at $96 million after a prolonged contract holdout. This contract secures his position with the Commanders until 2028.
Next year, McLaurin is set to earn $23.3 million, including a guaranteed $5.35 million if he is not medically cleared by April 1, potentially affecting his tenure with the team.
In light of McLaurin’s absence, the Commanders might adjust their strategy to utilize wide receivers Stefon Diggs and rookie Antonio Williams, along with tight end Chig Okonkwo, as quarterback Jayden Daniels’ options for passing targets.
After starting their season with a record of 1-4-1, the Commanders currently sit at the bottom of the NFC East. They are scheduled for a bye in Week 7.
