Wes Streeting, who recently stepped down as the U.K. Health Secretary, declared on Saturday his intention to run for the Labour leadership. His announcement comes after the party faced significant losses in the local elections. Streeting stated at a London think tank event, “We need a proper contest with the best candidates on the field, and I’ll be standing.”
Two days prior, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced a bid to become a Member of Parliament. If successful, Burnham could also join the expected Labour leadership contest. Although this contest seems likely, it has not been officially triggered by Members of Parliament (MPs) yet.
In a resignation letter criticizing Keir Starmer’s leadership, Streeting expressed doubts about Starmer’s capability to lead the Labour Party in the next general election. Streeting highlighted a lack of vision within the party, describing it as a “vacuum.” His letter followed the resignations of four other members of Starmer’s government after the party’s poor performance in local elections.
Nigel Farage’s right-wing populist party, Reform U.K., made significant advances across England in these elections. Streeting is among several potential challengers aiming to replace the prime minister. According to Labour Party rules, challengers need backing from at least 20% of Labour MPs to initiate a leadership contest.
Starmer has pledged to remain in office and cautioned that a leadership contest could result in “chaos” at a crucial time. He emphasized the need to focus on issues such as the cost of living crisis and the conflict in the Middle East. Starmer has been in office for under two years since Labour achieved a landslide victory in the last national parliamentary elections.
