After winning the 2023 U.S. Open, many expected PGA Tour player Wyndham Clark to soar to new heights. However, his career trajectory did not quite match expectations. On Sunday, Clark won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch, marking his first PGA Tour victory since February 2024. He recorded a 30-under score for the event, three shots ahead of Si Woo Kim.
Impressive Finale
Golfers often say “some tournaments are won and some are lost.” Clark claimed victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson with an extraordinary 11-under 60 in the final round. He nearly scored an eagle on the 72nd hole, which would have given him a 59, something only 15 others have achieved in PGA Tour history.
Kim started the final round ahead by two shots over Clark and Scottie Scheffler. Despite Kim’s strong six-under 65, he could not match Clark’s near-record performance.
Clark’s Comeback
This victory signified a major comeback for Clark, who missed the cut at the PGA Championship earlier in the month. His last win was the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and he hadn’t secured a 72-hole tournament win since the 2023 U.S. Open.
Clark’s success began with his first PGA Tour win at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship. In February 2024, he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after setting a course-record 60 in the third round. The final round was cancelled due to rain, and the event was shortened, making Clark the winner.
Struggles and Expectations
Despite nearly winning the 2024 PLAYERS Championship and being part of the 2023 U.S. Ryder Cup team, Clark faced challenges. Between 2023 and 2024, he won three titles and almost a fourth, including a major. But new victories brought higher expectations, affecting both fans and Clark himself.
The period from 2023 to 2024 did not carry into 2025, as Clark struggled to secure wins. He managed only two top-10 finishes in 24 tournaments and missed the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open, leading to a notable incident at Oakmont Country Club.
Future Prospects
Clark acknowledged his past difficulties in an interview with CBS golf reporter Amanda Balionis. Although he was absent from the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team, he still has room for growth, aiming to enhance his performance during significant events. Despite finishing within the top-5 at the 2025 Open Championship, he missed the cut in five of his last ten major appearances.
Clark’s next chance to make an impact is at the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, starting on June 18.
